Airbrushing is a good hobby to engage in. It broadens your imagination and it takes up your spare time, providing that you have the skill and creativity to begin with. If not, time and determination will eventually get something out of you. Now with airbrushing, anything can pretty much be your canvas, be it a wall, a shirt, a hat, you can even try to airbrush cars, which is pretty much what we’ll be focusing on in this article. You can also get involved with motorcycle airbrushing, how to airbrush license plates and pretty much a lot of other stuff as well. The following can be a few steps you can follow to properly airbrush a car.

The First Step

The first thing to remember when you airbrush cars is that you should practice your technique before airbrushing a real car. Make sure that you are familiar with your airbrush and any other tool required as well.

Next, wash, clean and dry carefully. It is always advisable to clean your canvas beforehand, be it that you’re learning how to motorcycle airbrush, airbrush cars, or anything else. For airbrushing cars, after washing, dry the car with a tack rag that won’t leave any fibres or debris behind. Park the car that you’ll airbrush in a well-ventilated and wear a face mask and goggles as well as gloves for precautionary measures. When airbrushing, always remember to don protective gear.

Mask off the areas on the car that you do not wish to cover with paint such as the chrome, the windows and the mirrors. Place sheets of paper or plastic over these and secure them with masking or painter’s tape. Check to see that the sheets of paper or plastic aren’t torn and that the tape is pressed flat.

The Base Coat

When involved in how to airbrush cars, start by airbrushing a base coat for your car. Apply this coating by holding the airbrush around 6 inches away and cover an area of the car that measures about 2-3 square feet. This measurement can pretty much depend on how comfortable you are with your airbrush. Don’t try to airbrush a wide area in just one go, stick to airbrushing a little at a time. Start spraying from the top of the vehicle, slowly making your way to the bottom. Let the coat dry. This will take around 24 hours. This duration can also apply to motorcycle airbrushing. After drying, wipe down the layer with a fresh tack rag to eliminate any debris.

After the base coat, you can now spray a second coat of paint over it. Usually, most airbrush projects start with a base coat, be it how to motorcycle airbrush, how to airbrush license plates an even when airbrushing helmets. Allow the second layer to dry for another 24 hours. After this, you can add a third layer of paint if you wish to. Once you are finishes, use a clear coat spray to give the care a glossy sheen.

The Finished Product

After around 12 hours of letting the clear coat dry, remove the masking tape and other masking materials. Make sure not to rub or even touch the recently applied paint with either your hand or tape as it can ruin the overall look of the car. After this is done, allow the car to finish drying for another 12 hours.

So all in all, how to airbrush cars is quite similar to how to airbrush license plates and several other items. All it takes is cleaning, a base coat, and several other layers of paint (as much as you wish) and a top coat of a clear spray for a glossy finish.
