Backgammon is a game of skills, smarts and certainly, luck. The roll of the dice is random and therefore, unpredictable. Backgammon has existed for a long time. People hundreds of years ago depended on board games for entertainment. Along with it, backgammon sets made of different materials were created to fill a need for sets that not only provides an opportunity to pass the time pleasantly but also delight the eye in the process.

Origins of Backgammon

Backgammon was said to have originated from the countries we now know as Iraq and Iran. Like most games, its beginnings were humble and definitely crude. The first sets, if one can call it that was most probably scratched out on the ground or on a piece of wood. In time, people began to improve on it, making it as pleasing as possible. Nowadays, one can observe that backgammon boards for sale come in a variety of materials. Backgammon boards usually come with 24 spaces or points, with each player having 15 checkers to move. These checkers are moved on to the spaces depending on the roll of the dice. Often, two or three are rolled and the number that results provides you with the number of spaces you are allowed to move your checker.

The Backgammon Board

Other board games can be played on a backgammon board. Because people have many uses for it, the set is required to be sturdy and long lasting. A leather backgammon set, if well taken cared of can serve its purpose for a long time. Other games played on a backgammon board are generally referred to as tables. While the same board can be used with playing backgammon or versions of tables, they are differentiated by the rules of each. When you are playing backgammon, starting positions differ from that of other table games. Scoring is also different and doubles are played twice.

How is Backgammon Different?

Backgammon as a game has rules that need to be followed, which effectively differentiates it from other table games. The starting position of each player consists of two checkers on their respective 24 points. At the middle point, there should be five checkers, three checkers on the 8-points and five on the six-points. Players have to play twice in case the roll produces a double. While it seems that getting four rolls is better, experienced backgammon players believe that it produces the opposite result. In scoring, the player who gets a gammon scores double while backgammon means a triple.

Through the years, backgammon has gone through many versions and incarnations, often depending on the country or region in which it is played.

As many people took an avid interest to it, backgammon sets made of different materials were made available. From wooden backgammon set to leather and any other viable material, people have fused design and function to come up with sets for every taste and purpose.

With a lot of history behind it, backgammon has become a classic game that is considered a hobby by many. Young and old, alike can enjoy a backgammon game to bond, relax and even make money. The game has successfully crossed generations and is still going strong even in this era when other modes of entertainment are available.
